Member Spotlight - Büşra Osma

Büşra Osma graduated from the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department at Piri Reis University in 2021. She graduated with a master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Piri Reis University in 2023. Currently, she is a Ph.D. student in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department at Yıldız Technical University.Busra Osma

She started her career journey at Skipsteknisk Engineering A.S. as a project engineer in 2021. She had done the detailed design of many fishing vessels from 2021 to 2023 in the Construction Department. She decided to combine her research passion with her career journey; thus, she is a research and development engineer at Hidroteknik Nautical Design Technologies Company.

In her research fields are the swelling behavior of polymer materials, the acoustic properties of composite materials, and composite materials in ANSYS software. During her Ph.D. degree, her research aim is to reduce underwater noise.

 

Questions:  

1. At what point in your career did you join SNAME? 

I was at my bachelor’s degree, and I decided to be a member of SNAME after SNAME ex-president Suzanne Beckstoffer visited Istanbul to introduce SNAME on October 7, 2019.

 

2. How has SNAME membership been of value to you in your career? 

SNAME has been of value to me to contribute to improve my network in the marine industry.

 

3. When did you know you wanted to pursue a job in the maritime field? 

I always wanted to be an engineer, but I didn’t know which field to choose. According to my research, I decided to be a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineer during my preparation for the university entrance exam.

 

4. What advice would you give to those entering the maritime field? 

Explore your passion in the marine field and combine your passion with your career journey.

 

5. What do you do in your spare time? 

I do virtual events with valuable professionals in the marine industry for SNAME as part of the SNAME Turkey Community.

 

6. What is your favorite book, movie or tv series? 

My favorite movies, V for Vandetta, and Matrix. My favorite books are “The Education of the Will: The Theory and Practice of Self-Culture,” written by Jules Payot, and “The Country of White Lilies” written by Grigory Petrov.. 

 

7. What is a fun fact about yourself? 

Learning the English language and trying to speak it is fun! But please be careful when speaking in professional life; for example, you can mix “maybe” with “baby” when speaking with a professor like me!
